About

We are the Junior League of Spartanburg

Above all else, our goal is to promote and perpetuate social change in Spartanburg County. By empowering women and providing valuable leadership training, we are giving local women the tools to get involved, put their talents to work, and positively impact our community.

Strength in Numbers

The Junior League of Spartanburg, Inc. (JLS) is a member of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), comprised of more than 125,000 women worldwide.

In 1940, a group of local women identified a need in our community and organized the Junior Charity League of Spartanburg with 35 charter members. After serving Spartanburg for eight years, the League applied for admission to the then Association of Junior Leagues of America (AJLA) in 1948.

After a three-year admissions process, including the completion of the Community Orientation Course and site visits by AJLA Board and staff, the Junior Charity League of Spartanburg was accepted as the 176th member of AJLA in the fall of 1951 and became known as the Junior League of Spartanburg, Inc. (JLS). Since 1940, JLS has grown to an organization with over 300 members, including attorneys, teachers, marketers, stay-at-home moms and everything in between.

For 80 years, the League has provided vital services in the areas of health, education, arts, youth services, historic preservation and community service.

The League’s first major project was the establishment of the Visiting Nurse Service in 1942. Since then, JLS has contributed more than 1.8 million volunteer hours and provided more than $2 million in funding to support community programs and projects.

Our Local Impact

The Junior League of Spartanburg, Inc. works within our community to help women, children and families through various community service projects focused in the areas of healthy eating, classroom education, and literacy and school readiness.
